The fifth installment of the far too long running Ice Age series (which at age fourteen is now older than its entire fan base) is so consistently obnoxious that it makes the three grating sequels before it seem pleasant in comparison along with things like fingernails on a chalkboard, car alarms, and Hillary Clinton’s voice. It’s not enough to say that I was indifferent toward the plight of the characters (an asteroid is coming toward Earth and Bruce Willis is nowhere to be found). I was actively hoping for their demise so that I could spend the remaining minutes of the film…

Animated films continue to dominate Summer 2016 as The Secret Life of Pets took first place in its second weekend with a terrific $50.5 million. This marks the fifth weekend in a row that an animated film has sat on top of the box office (Finding Dory took the crown in the first three weekends, followed by two wins in a row for Pets). In 2 weeks, Pets has grossed a staggering $203 million. Looks to me like Illumination Entertainment has another box office home run on its hands. With the Despicable Me trilogy, The Lorax, and this all grossing over $200 million, it seems like there is no stopping this underdog studio’s rise…
It was a solid Independence Day weekend for everyone not named Steven Spielberg as three films posted numbers above the $30 million mark. Disney/PIXAR’s Finding Dory was number one for the third weekend in a row with $41 million for an awesome grand total of $372 million. At this rate it ought to pass Captain America: Civil War’s $405 million total sometime next week and become the highest grossing film of 2016. I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to also predict that it ultimately pass the total gross of The Dark Knight Rises and find itself in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films of All Time Club. Can…
It was a great weekend for ocean themed movies and a not so great weekend for everything else. Let’s take a look! PIXAR’s Finding Dory took first place again following a record setting opening weekend with an excellent $72.9 million. This is good for a cumulative total of $286 million. Look for it to set some more records in the near future when it defeats Shrek 2 for the title of the highest grossing animated film ever and becomes the first to hit $500 million domestically. Get ready for Finding Bubbles. In second place is Independence Day: Resurgence which is another way-too-late sequel. Unfortunately this one is not fairing nearly…
There are two schools of thought when it comes to Independence Day. One is that it is a spectacularly stupid disaster movie that helped usher in our current era of mindless KABLOOIE! blockbusters. The second is that it is a spectacularly stupid disaster movie that helped usher in our current era of mindless KABLOOIE! blockbusters… yet is nevertheless pretty freaking awesome. I’m in that second camp wholeheartedly (although I do completely understand why others set up their tents in the first one). Independence Day rules. Is it stupid? Oh, you bet your life it is. But as a butt-kicking summer popcorn movie, it can’t be…
We here at ScreenGeek.net are so in love with Nicolas Cage that we’ll even cover his shopping trips. Call it an obsession if you will. Ran into the one and only #nicolascage while at @AmazingComicCon #LasVegas He purchased a Ghost Rider painting. pic.twitter.com/JNvuQvGBxt — Ron Bird (@RonBirdArt) June 18, 2016 The Greatest Living Human showed up as a fan at Comic Con this weekend to build up his comic book collection. Word is that the actor spent upwards of a million dollars at the convention for some rare comic books. When Nicholas Cage buys rings at @AmazingComicCon, their Lantern rings. #Naturally #ALVCC…
It was a most excellent weekend at the box office as Finding Dory destroyed records (read our review here) with a fantastic $136.1 million opening. The Disney/PIXAR sequel now boasts the highest opening weekend gross for an animated movie leaving Shrek the Third’s record of $121 million in the dust. It is also amazingly the 18th highest opening weekend of all time animated or not. The sky’s the limit with this one as a domestic finish of over $350 million and a worldwide gross of over $1 billion is certainly within reach. The folks behind Independence Day: Resurgence have got to be hoping that their way-too-late sequel boasts similar results this…
I like to keep an open mind about new movie projects, but it’s hard to do so sometimes. Especially with this piece of news that I just got. Apparently the 1974 minor classic revenge film Death Wish is being remade and it will star Bruce Willis and be directed by Eli Roth. The first red flag here is the fact that it is a remake and a very unnecessary one at that. I’m not going to act like Death Wish hasn’t aged in the 42 years since its release, but it certainly doesn’t require an update. It’s not like you can’t make your own…
This weekend we finally had our first non-superhero movie of the summer pull off a $40 million + opening weekend with The Conjuring 2. Sequel after sequel has tanked over the past few weeks and I’m sure the folks over at Warner Bros are breathing a huge sigh of relief as the film pulled in a fantastic $40.3 million. Since this thing only carries a $40 million budget, it’s already a big success having pulled in $90 million across the globe. I must be a Negative Nancy and comment that the domestic opening was in fact a bit below the original’s…
Full disclosure up front: I did not like The Conjuring. One could even say that I hated it. I found it to be a generic, surprisingly plotless haunted house movie that failed to set itself apart from the seemingly hundreds of similar Blumhouse projects that have come out recently. So, if you are one of that movie’s many fans, maybe take this review with a grain of salt and we can agree to disagree if it comes to that. Or you can start a comment war. That’s good for post reach. In The Conjuring 2, another nice family is tormented by evil spirits. At…
