Like many, my interest was piqued when news broke that Warner Bros. was working on a solo film for the Joker, as part of an effort to expand the DC Extended Universe with more standalone films. That idea in itself is actually one worth supporting, as standalone films not shackled to franchise demands means they can be more experimental and take risks not usually seen with the genre. Adding to the hype, it was speculated that Jared Leto would not be returning to the role of The Joker for the film after the mixed response to his portrayal in Suicide…

It seems that the success of Marvel has changed film making, but not necessarily for the better. The lesson that every studio seems to have taken is that people want a shared universe, instead of the more obvious lesson that well written and well acted characters go a long way. While having a shared universe is by no means a bad thing, it doesn’t always work. The best type of shared universes are those that already have a rich mythology to draw on, which is why superhero franchises are the model. But not every franchise can be DC or Marvel,…
You’ll be hard pressed to find someone to defend Marvel’s Iron Fist (although one of our writers actually did just that). What was supposed to be the final piece of The Defenders mini-series turned into a muddled, boring mess that felt more like a soap opera than a superhero series. None of the Marvel Netflix series are perfect, but Iron Fist had too many problems to be considered decent. The writing and dialogue we’re poor, with no clear direction for the entire thirteen episodes. The fight choreography felt like it was taken from a middle school drama class, along with…
The future of the x-men series isn’t exactly clear. Despite the critical and commercial success of Deadpool and Logan, X-men Apocalypse was considered by most a failure with a lower than expected box office take and the lowest Rotten Tomato score since X-men Origins: Wolverine. This didn’t bode well for continuing the rebooted story line, but Twentieth Century Fox seems to be pushing ahead with three new X-men films scheduled for 2018 including New Mutant, Deadpool 2, and Dark Phoenix; and it looks like a couple of familiar faces might be returning. As reported by MTV News correspondent Josh Horowitz,…
This article contains massive amounts of spoilers! Let’s be honest, Marvel movies have had a problem with their villains. Besides Tom Hiddleston’s hypnotic portrayal of Loki, most Marvel movies feature cheap, forgettable villains that usually get minimal screen time and are dead by the end of the film. Which is a shame, because some talented actors are wasted on these poorly written characters who only exist because every superhero film needs a villain. Does anyone even remember what Mads Mikkelsen’s character was named in Doctor Strange, or Christopher Eccleston in Thor: The Dark World? Thankfully, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2…
Suicide Squad is a hard film to defend. What little good the movie has is definitely outweighed by the bad. The first act is borderline incoherent, the music is out of place and obviously added after the fact, and The Joker, easily the most famous villain in comic book history, is put into a B-story that has no effect on the plot at all. But even with all these flaws, it’s hard to blame writer/director David Ayer. It was reported he had only six weeks to write the script, and after filming was complete Warner Bros insisted on re-shoots to…
Cars has always been the odd man out of Pixar franchises. Not hated, but never receiving the universal praise most Pixar films get. In fact, Cars 2 sits at a low 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. Which is weird considering the same people behind some of Pixar’s most beloved films worked on it and it follows the Pixar formula of bringing to life any random object or animal. Although, there was always an eerie element hanging over the Cars films which made the series wholly different from the studio’s other works. In every other Pixar film we see normal human people…
Everyone’s interest was piqued when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that not only are the upcoming Avengers films no longer filming back to back, but that the fourth Avenger film still has no title because it’s a spoiler for the upcoming third one. The next Avengers film is already titled Avengers: Infinity War, so what could be the giant spoiler in the next film’s title? It turns out Guardian’s of the Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana may have already told us. In an interview with BBC News, Saldana was quoted as saying they are in the middle of filming “infinity…
