Sony and Marvel will be coming together to bring us Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that at one time seemed like an impossibility to Marvel fans. Since the initial announcement, not a lot has been said about which company will be maintaining creative control over the web-slinger. The big man at Marvel, Kevin Feige, recently spoke with Collider on the topic and made it be known that it is in fact Marvel who will be in charge of Spider-Man creatively from Captain America: Civil War up all the way to his solo films (and beyond!).
According to Feige:
“We’re working very much [together]. It is a— I don’t know exactly what the credits will be, but it is a Sony Pictures production of a Marvel Studios film. The agreement was that it is very much a Sony Pictures movie. Amy Pascal is co-producing it with us and [Sony Chairman] Tom Rothman is leading the charge for Sony and that we are the creative producers. We are the ones hiring the actor, introducing him in this film, and then working right now on the script and soon to be shooting the actual Spidey film.”
According to Feige it sounds like Sony will be producing the film on a silent level, but Marvel will be the creative producers and will keep control of the character and how Peter Parker interacts within the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has already been established. Marvel chose the actor, his character story-arc from introduction to his solo movies, and his solo re-reboot movie scripts.
Although nothing was said about the details on Spidey’s backstory within the MCU, Feige did let it be known that the events in his past will at the very least be alluded to. After seeing Uncle Ben die twice in the last ten years, most fans are well aware of the story about Spider-Man’s motivation. Feige also said that this rendition of Spider-Man will be more forward focused, and not dwell on his past. Check out what else he had to say:
“There are events that made Peter who he was, and we’ll certainly allude to those events, but we’re much more focused on his future and how he continues to grow and have a steep learning curve after, certainly, the adventure he had in Civil War on how to be his own hero.”
With Spider-Man in full creative control of Marvel, I have no doubt that his future is going to be extremely entertaining. Sony are being good sports with the arrangement, and we can only hope that Sony and Marvel continue to play nicely. At the end of the day, the ones who really win with this situation are the fans – and isn’t that how it should be?
