Warner Bros had a very successful run with Mortal Kombat, which further proved alongside certain other modern adaptations that video game movies can indeed work. As such, fans are already hoping that a sequel to Mortal Kombat will be announced in the near future. While there isn’t anything concrete yet, there are rumblings that the studio is indeed working on Mortal Kombat 2 – and it appears they even want actor Charlie Hunnam to portray Johnny Cage.
With a variety of actors already having been teased for the part in the past, Charlie Hunnam is certainly an interesting choice to play Johnny Cage. But no doubt fans will be excited for whoever does get attached to the role, as he was one of the few core characters missing from the previous Mortal Kombat film. His character has resonated with fans for decades, and it definitely seemed like there was a gap in the movie without him. Of course, this was obviously done to tease a potential sequel, so we can only assume Warner Bros will formally announce such plans in the near future.
As for now, we must simply go with the reports that Charlie Hunnam could indeed get the part, as revealed via insider Daniel Richtman. Then again, this information should also be taken with a grain of salt. If there is a Mortal Kombat 2 in development prior to any kind of formal announcement, then it’s most definitely only in its earliest stages. So anything could change as the film continues to be developed.
In any case, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any updates on Mortal Kombat 2 and the film’s presumable introduction of Johnny Cage. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how things could move forward with the Mortal Kombat film franchise, especially considering the success of the first film in both theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service.
The previous Mortal Kombat film was directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay written by Greg Russo.
