Last week J.J Abrams revealed that it would be ‘narrow minded’ to not believe that the Star Wars universe would feature gay characters. Well now a prominent cast member has weighed in with his views on the subject.
In an interview with The Sun, actor Mark Hamill explained what he believes this means for his character:
“I just read online that JJ is very much open to that. In the old days you would get fan mail. But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer.’ Before going on to add an important point ‘If you think Luke is gay, of course he is, You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
I believe this a great way to look at it and doesn’t exclude anybody. There is plenty of potential to bring in homosexual characters into the franchise, with recent talk suggesting that Oscar Isaacs Poe Dameron may in fact fall under this category.
