Fans have so far been eager to learn the truth about the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home and whether or not Spidey franchise actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are involved. While many coincidences and rumors point in the direction that they are indeed appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, this latest rumor is a bit more extreme. Instead of simply going for a cameo, it suggests that Sony actually wants both director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire to come back for a proper Spider-Man 4. Obviously this information should be taken with a grain of salt, but it is an interesting concept. Especially considering the way both Sony and Marvel have been toying with the multiverse concept.
As revealed via Giant Freakin Robot:
“According to one of our trusted and proven inside sources, Sony wants Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi to reunite for another Spider-Man movie. The hope is to have Raimi direct a movie starring Maguire that would somehow work as a spinoff from whatever takes place in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
However, they were quick to clarify that the project would mostly remain standalone. While it could potentially reference the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would only do so in passing, and that Spider-Man 4 would mostly exist as its own thing. This could also allow the film to more openly interact with Sony’s other Marvel films instead of getting in the way of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appearances.
However, the site also notes that Sony is the main party interested in this project. It seems that neither Sam Raimi or Tobey Maguire have actually been interested or formally attached. But if certain rumors regarding Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home are to be believed, then it seems reasonable they could come back for Spider-Man 4 as well. It’s definitely an interesting prospect, and one that seems possibly enough considering the current state of superhero cinema.
