The rumor that Jared Leto’s Joker was in fact Jason Todd had fans all in a frenzy. Soon, it was a competition between him and John Cena of how many secret identities they had. But before all that, where did the idea of Jason Todd arise? Of course, it was that Robin suit in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer with Joker’s graffiti, “Hahaha Jokes on you Batman.”
In the comics, Jason Todd was the second Robin after Dick Grayson. He had a snot-nosed attitude, far from Grayson, that readers did not enjoy. Therefore, when the publishers ran a call-in vote to decide the fate of the punk kid, the verdict was to let him die. So the writers went to work and had Joker beat him to death with a crowbar. Eventually, Ra’s Al Ghul resurrected him with the Lazarus Pit, and he became the second Red Hood, picking up the mantle after his murderer.
Now that DC is creating a cineverse, (a cine-multiverse, at that), there’s a good chance we’ll see this play out on screen. If not, then why would they put that teaser in the movie? Just like Marvel has with their MCU, it looks like DC will have the same philosophy of leaving no stone un-turned. Entertainment Weekly reported that, DC Chief Creative Office and the pen behind such works as The Flash, Teen Titans, and Infinite Crisis, as well as producer on many DC shows and movies, Geoff Johns had this to say:
“We’ll be exploring that…..No one says specifically the name of which Robin that is.”
There have been rumors of one of the Robins appearing in BvS. Whether it is Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, or even Tim Drake, we don’t know yet. Bruce’s son, Damien could even show up sometime. What we do know is that Batgirl will make an appearance in the form of Jena Malone. Though, it’s still uncertain if this Barbara Gordon will indeed be Batgirl, or the paralyzed Oracle.
The last time we saw the Bat Family get together on screen was in the mockery that was Batman and Robin. George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, and Alicia Silverstone called back to the days of Adam West, Burt Ward, and Yvonne Craig. Now with a more serious cast and tone (perhaps even R-rated), we could finally see a true depiction of the Family.
“It’s in development,” Ben Affleck said of a future Batman movie. “You should keep your eyes peeled for sure.”
You can watch Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the Dark Knight evolve with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice here soon on March 25th, in Suicide Squad on August 5th, and then in Justice League: Part One in 2017.
