Paramount is already stepping things up with their new streaming service, Paramount Plus, which will offer a wide variety of content to compete with other similar streaming services. In a surprising move, they’ve announced that a new Pet Sematary prequel will be arriving exclusively on the platform. Although details are sparse, it is being described as “a new origins story”. One can only imagine that it will explore events which take place before the 2019 Pet Sematary film, based on Stephen King’s iconic novel of the same name. This is especially evident in that this new prequel shares the same writer with the 2019 film, Jeff Buhler.
As specifically reported via Deadline, here’s what they said:
“…in the works is a new origins story feature based on the Stephen King bestseller Pet Sematary, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing and a script by Jeff Buhler.”
It’ll be interesting to see what route this new film will take, especially if it’s an origin story. There’s a lot to tell in the world of Pet Sematary, and with a variety of movies and one particularly rich novel to take inspiration from, the possibilities are nearly endless. Hopefully the end result will be something that Stephen King fans and horror fans alike can enjoy. This will also be the fourth Pet Sematary movie, following the first adaptation of Stephen King’s novel which was released in 1989. That film spawned its own follow-up, Pet Sematary Two, which was released in 1992. Then it wasn’t until 2019 that we got the latest interpretation of King’s horrifying story. That particular film was directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, while Mary Lambert directed the first two Pet Sematary films.
With Jeff Buhler busy writing the script for this Pet Sematary prequel, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing, we can only hope that more details will be shared soon. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek as we have them.
