The rumors surrounding Spider-Man 3 just keep growing and growing. However, the most recent speculation about the next installment in the Spider-Verse may not be what fans have expected. After plenty of casting speculation over the last few weeks, reports have emerged suggesting that one of the fan favorite characters rumored to return may not make it out of the film alive.
The currently-untitled Spider-Man 3 is currently due to swing into cinemas next December. A number of characters from all three Spider-Man franchises are rumored to appear in the 2021 film, including Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman. And, of course, the Spider-Men themselves: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are both said to be reprising their roles as Peter Parker.
But with the return of the Spider-Men comes the return of some other characters — namely, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacey. Played by Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone respectively, both characters are said to be back for the 2021 blockbuster. However, a recent rumor has suggested that one of the familiar faces returning may not make it out of the film alive. According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel is looking at possibly killing Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane. He notes that it would be to flip the usual trope of the love interest dying in tragic circumstances, and that it may not happen in Spider-Man 3 — it could also happen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
While there’s a lot of familiar faces set to return for the highly-anticipated film, there is some bad news — because, according to another recent rumor, it looks like a lot of them may end up being cameos. The rumor suggests that the Spider-Men “are mostly for the 3rd act,” and so it looks like we may be waiting a little while longer to see them on-screen.
Spider-Man 3 is set to hit theaters on December 17th, 2021.
