Fans have been overjoyed ever since WB agreed to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League, coming to the HBO Max streaming service. And it created a snowball effect. Initially, it was just going to be the already shot material in Snyder’s vision. The hype behind this news has led to reshoots and new scenes have been created, making it a 4 hour long film that will be broken up into 4 1-hour episodes. Now, there are talks of a sequel and rebuilding the DCEU around Snyder’s original plan. This film could be pushing the limits as Snyder believes he knows what the rating would be: R.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder talks about his news scenes and what he has been able to do with this ‘new’ version:
“Here’s one piece of information nobody knows: The movie is insane and so epic and is probably rated R, that’s one thing I think will happen, that it will be an R-rated version, for sure. We haven’t heard from the MPAA, but that’s my gut.”
Even though the MPAA hasn’t actually made its official rating just yet, Snyder is using context clues from previous ratings to make this assumption:
“There’s one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what’s going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half. So [the rating would be due to] violence and profanity, probably both.”
This isn’t the only bomb that Snyder drops here, either. After the controversial call by WB to release all of its 2021 films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, Snyder thinks that WB will retroactively do the same with this. He believes that WB will not only release it on HBO Max, but it could also get a theatrical release as well:
“I’m a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we’re already talking about Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it’s coming to HBO Max. So weirdly, it’s the reverse [of the trend].”
So, there you have it. Not only could the new Justice League be rated R, but it may also get a theatrical release. With the movie being 4 hours long, and theaters hurting to get films to play in the first place, this seems highly unlikely. Theaters would have to allot at least 5 hours per viewing, meaning you’d get only 2 viewings a day, three on the weekends (maybe). It just seems unfeasible in this ‘new normal’ of cinemas coming in 2021 – but we will just have to wait and see when something official comes from WB.
