Although fans seem to be divisive, it is no doubt interesting that Blumhouse has surprised audiences by creating not a remake of The Craft – but rather a direct sequel set decades after the original film. As such, there’s a lot of potential with The Craft: Legacy, which was released on various video-on-demand platforms today. The Craft: Legacy is rated PG-13, a different rating from the original’s R-rating, but it does seem fitting nevertheless. After all, the original would no doubt share a PG-13 rating as well if it were released today.
The reasoning for the official PG-13 rating given to The Craft: Legacy by the MPAA:
“Thematic elements, crude and sexual content, language and brief drug material.”
The early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are mixed, as it’s current rating is at 58% with the critics overall consensus reading:
The user ratings are a little worse, at 48%. As more reviews come in, however, that will obviously change. The IMDb user score is currently at 4.6 out of 10 based on 153 ratings, which is not good at all.
It does sound as though the film will still fit in with the original. After all, the rating description doesn’t just reveal the same type of content that the original is known for – but the trailer seemed to boast a similar atmosphere to the original film as well. Whether or not that sticks with fans is yet to be seen, but it should be an interesting October treat nevertheless.
The Craft: Legacy stars Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, Zoey Luna, Michelle Monaghan, and David Duchovny. The cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine, Charles Vandervaart, Donald MacLean Jr., Julian Grey, Hannah Gordon, Mike Dara, Owen Szabo, Chris Tomassetti, and Devin Cecchetto.
The film was written and directed by Zoe Lister-Jones. It was executive produced by Andrew Fleming, co-writer and director of the original film. Jason Blum, Douglas Wick, and Lucy Fisher are attached to the project as producers.
The Craft: Legacy will be given a 48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99, as well as an option for a premium digital purchase at a suggested retail price of $24.99.
