It’s beginning to look a lot more like the “multiverse” really is the next step for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With revelations like Doctor Strange playing a role in the next Spider-Man film – currently being referred to as Spider-Man 3, along with inclusions like Jamie Foxx’s character Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it’s incredibly exciting to see how far Marvel is willing to go with tying these separate Spidey franchises together. Well, after reports that actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in talks for the next MCU Spider-Man film – a new report suggests that they have officially signed on. But is it true?
A report by FandomWire suggests that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will each be playing a major part in the new movie. This means their roles aren’t just being restricted to post credits scenes. Rather, they’ll actually be implemented during the film’s third act. Apparently they’ll be helping Tom Holland’s Peter Parker battle a variety of foes from across all of the different Spider-Man franchises.
Pretty exciting news for fans, especially for those who’ve been wanting to see a live-action Spiderverse movie go into production. As Marvel continues expanding their “multiverse”, it makes sense that Spider-Man would be one of the best routes to take this multiverse concept to its full potential. However, Sony has now commented on the matter to ET Online:
“Those rumoured castings are not confirmed,” a rep for the studio says.
Now, fans will note that this doesn’t deny that talks are happening. With that said, they do make sense considering the way Marvel and Sony have already been slyly connecting their various franchises. And with Doctor Strange also in the fold, anything is possible. Let’s hope more details regarding Spider-Man 3 come soon and the inclusion of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield alongside Tom Holland is something fans will actually get to see.
This next film in the Spider-Man franchise, tentatively titled Spider-Man 3, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
