Last fall, Marvel announced that they were taking a stab at half hour comedies. No date has been slated yet, but Damage Control will snuggle in at ABC, alongside fellow Marvel shows Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, and the upcoming Marvel’s Most Wanted. Damage Control will be about the clean up crew for some of the most devastating superhero battles.
While Damage Control sounds like a fresh take on comic book television, it looks as though it will have some competition. DC has thrown its hat in the ring with Powerless, which will air on NBC. Though we all know what happened the last time NBC had a DC show (poor Constantine). But like Deadpool, this will be a comedy, which garners a whole different set of viewers than their dramatic counterparts.
Written by Ben Queen (Cars 2), “an office comedy about the exceedingly average employees at an insurance company and their quest to, find their own power” says the official description, which compares it to The Office.
Vanessa Hudgens from Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Grease: Live has been cast as Emily Locke, “a claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people, but who is increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city,” according to TVLine.com.
It’s great to see that the comic book genre is expanding its diversity of subject matter. I know I’ll never get tired of superheroes, but these moves will keep the genre fresh with the general public, so we can keep enjoying for years to come.
