While Deadpool broke new ground on what a successful comic book movie could be, it’s easy to forget that it’s part of the X-Men cinematic universe. After the newest box office numbers have come in, it’s becoming one of the most successful X-Men movies at that.
Over the weekend, Deadpool passed X-Men: The Last Stand as the highest grossing X-Men film domestically. Deadpool has now grossed $235,000,000, surpassing the third X-Men film’s $234,000,000 in US ticket sales.
Deadpool still has a little bit of ground to go before becoming the global champion of X-Men movie ticket sales. The merc with a mouth still has about $250,000,000 before his film passes X-Men: Days of Future Past, which took the world by storm in 2014.
Even if it doesn’t catch up with DOFP, Deadpool is already considered a huge success. It was a gamble that paid off, showing that a super-hero movie can be violent, vulgar, and produced with a relatively small budget (for a super-hero movie anyways).
It’s also now the highest grossing R-rated comic book film.
An untitled Deadpool sequel was greenlit earlier this year.
