You know every once in a while we hear a classic is hitting the remake wagon, or rebooted or getting a ‘second cousin twice removed kinda’ sequel (Kindergarten Cop 2 anyone?) and sometimes that rumor fades away, like when Scorsese and De Niro enjoy stirring the media pot with a Taxi Driver sequel every few years.
So with years of non-starters I kinda wondered if Blade Runner 2 was just “tears in the rain”. But todays announcement from Alcon Entertainment indeed isn’t “time to die” for the Ryan Gosling sequel but time to go green with a January 12 2018 release date. So far we know that Harrison Ford is returning to dystopian Los Angeles (which was originally set in 2019!) as Rick Deckard, Denis Villeneuve will be in the directors chair along with 13 times Oscar nom Roger Deakins as cinematographer (they both previously worked on the brilliant Sicario) Ridley Scott will produce and original Blade Runner screenplay writer Hampton Fancher will be joined by Michael Green (who worked with Scott on Prometheus) to write the new story which is reportedly set decades from the 1982 original.
