It isn’t often that the public is allowed to see statistics directly from Netflix, but the popular streaming service has just unveiled their top 10 most popular original movies. And this isn’t just for a specific time period – these are the top 10 most popular original movies for Netflix, ever, in the history of the service. As such, it’s interesting to finally be able to look back and see what movies happened to be the most popular. And the answers are quite surprising for some spots.
Obviously there are a few of the titles you would expect to make the list. With original films on Netflix like the extremely hyped Bird Box or Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, it isn’t hard to believe they’d be on the list. But with that said, there are still a few surprising titles as mentioned above.
Here’s the full list that was released by Netflix, via Bloomberg:
Extraction – 99 million
Bird Box – 89 million
Spenser Confidential – 85 million
6 Underground – 83 million
Murder Mystery – 73 million
The Irishman – 64 million
Triple Frontier – 63 million
The Wrong Missy – 59 million
The Platform – 56 million
The Perfect Date – 48 million
It needs to be mentioned that these numbers are actually only how many times each film was streamed in its initial month, not the actual number of individuals who’ve managed to watch the films. They also only needed to watch a mere two minutes for the number to count, so these might’ve been counted differently had they included only those who watched the entire movies.
What’s also interesting is that a majority of the titles listed were released within the past year, and all of them were released within the past three years. But considering how many of us have been stuck inside this current year so far, it makes a lot of sense.
Nevertheless, it goes to show just how lucrative releasing a movie on Netflix can be. And in a world full of streaming services, that’s probably one of the more important things for the entertainment industry to take a look at.
