As the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks to move forward into their future with Phase 4 coming soon, the studio is looking to bring in new heroes to take up the mantle of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Just about all of the original Avengers have had, or are having, their swan song of sorts, save one. Thor Odinson, God of Thunder, will be the first character in the MCU to get a fourth solo film with the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth is returning to the character as Taika Waititi helms another film looking to bring ever more vigor to a once slightly stagnant hero. But, does this mean we’re getting many more years of Hemsworth as Thor, or will another character move into the mantle?
Thor: Love and Thunder not only showcases the return of Hemsworth’s Thor, but also will introduce a new Thor in Jane Foster. Returning to the role of Foster is Academy Award winning actress Natalie Portman. But, instead of being just a scientist, Foster will become worthy and gain the powers of Thor. As Mighty Thor, Foster will bring another powerful female presence to the MCU, and possibly be a replacement for Thor down the line. This movie will be just as much about her as it is him, and she has a very compelling story to tell.
In the comics, Foster took up the hammer whilst battling breast cancer. And, while saving the world with her new found powers, it created complications with her illness. If the MCU brings this story into the films, it will add an intriguing character arc to a future hero. But, she may not be the only one that could replace Thor in the MCU.
A fan favorite character may be coming into the MCU fold, as Beta Ray Bill has been rumored to make an appearance in the film. The Korbonite warrior was able to lift Mjolnir in the comics, deeming him worthy. This caused Odin to craft Stormbreaker for Bill to carry on Thor’s mantle into the cosmos. With Stormbreaker already appearing in the MCU, Bill could take up the Thor mantle as well.
The horse faced alien has already been teased by Waititi, with his face on the effigy of the Grandmaster’s past gladiatorial champions. So, will he replace Thor?
Logically, both could actually do it. While we don’t know whether Hemsworth will continue on as Thor, and he does have a renewed excitement over the role, Foster could replace him on Earth and Bill could join the new Guardians of the Galaxy as a cosmic Thunder god. Heck, even all three could carry the mantle, in a way. There is plenty of room in the MCU for all three.
