The Purge franchise has grown into a substantial part of our cultural zeitgeist, with its high-concept premise (a day where everyone can commit whatever crime they please) resonating with audiences. While the original Purge was a mixed bag aside from its unique premise, its respective follow-ups have made a strong effort to distinguish their own tone. The last entry in the franchise Purge: Election Year pushed the series boundaries further, wisely commenting on the social/racial inequality present in our society. Many were excited to see what the latest entry The Forever Purge could do to up the ante, but it appears fans are going to have to wait a little while longer.
A Universal press release has revealed that The Forever Purge has been pulled from its July 10, 2020 release date. While the studio did not confirm whether the film would release via streaming or theatrical, they did say they plan for it to be “redated at a later time”.
This news isn’t particularly shocking, with Universal not releasing a single pre-release image or trailer for the upcoming project. It’s hard to blame the studio for being cautious with a movie set to open during this summer, with audiences likely to be hesitant to return to the theater amidst the Coronavirus. Those audiences would be even more hesitant to see a horror film, considering the horrors that have occurred over the past few months.
That being said, I am interested to see what The Forever Purge brings to the table. With this delay, the writer and directors behind this sequel could potential rework the sequel to deal with our Coronavirus-stricken wold, which would be fascinating to see on the big screen. It will be interesting to see when Universal re-dates the film going forward.
