One of the most impressive changes in the horror genre is a greater focus on socially relevant films. Mainstream horror used to be chock-full of uninspired formula, and while those movies still exist (Fantasy Island was the latest), many buck that trend with their own thematic ideas. Projects like The Lighthouse, Hereditary, and The Invisible Man have scared not only because of their eery imagery, rather through tackling complicated truths of humans and society. The latest horror venture Antebellum, which comes from the producers of Get Out and Us, looks to continue that trend.
Starring actress and musician Janelle Monae, Antebellum has intrigued horror fans with short teasers that have not revealed much plot. A new 42-second trailer adds some more intriguing nuggets of story, with its release coming alongside the first synopsis for the project. Check out the trailer and story:
Successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.
Even with the project’s release being only a month away, Lionsgate has been very careful about releasing specific information. In a culture where most movie trailers release too much info, this is a welcome change, allowing for the audience to be completely shocked by the horrors this film will explore. Both trailers have displayed a strong visual eye alongside an intriguing narrative, which seems to follow Veronica being kidnapped and brought into an alternate reality where slavery exists.
I am also excited for Antebellum because it presents Janelle Monae another opportunity to shine. She has proven already to be extremely talented and versatile, stealing the screen in supporting roles in Hidden Figures and Harriet. Hopefully the success of this project will lead to more staring roles for her.
