If you had asked me any time before today if I ever wanted to see a Back to the Future reboot, I would have laughed in your face before adamantly refusing any such thing. But, after the latest DeepFake video to hit YouTube, I may be changing my stance. That is, if you cast Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. in the roles of Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively.
For the uninitiated, DeepFake videos use modern CGI to seamlessly replace the faces of actors in films with faces of other actors. And, the results are pretty hilarious and spectacular. There have been ones like Jim Carrey in The Shining and Sylvester Stallone in Home Alone. The latest one showcases two Marvel Cinematic Universe alums, Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr., in the classic film, Back to the Future. The scene used is in the high school during 1955 where Marty and Doc are trying to figure out their plan to get Marty’s parents together to fall in love.
It’s crazy to watch this scene with these two actors. It’s uncanny how much Holland looks like a young Michael J. Fox, so much so that you tend to forget a face swap was done in the first place. Downey, on the other hand, doesn’t look anything like Christopher Lloyd, yet it still feels right. Downey would make an excellent Doc Brown to Holland’s McFly, and they already have an established rapport with each other from their time in the MCU.
While we seem to be living in the Age of Reboots, and this DeepFake does give us a good option for this remake, hopefully the BttF Franchise is one that studios won’t touch. These films are classics that still hold up to this day, and there’s no need to make a new one. But, if they do, they better get Holland and Downey to play the leads, because it doesn’t get much better than this.
