Disney and Marvel have been seeing some major progress on their upcoming plethora of Disney Plus shows. They seem to be having a lot of faith in Disney’s new streaming service, and rightfully so with the success of original content like The Mandalorian. But while we still have awhile before the new Marvel shows begin to pop up on the service, it looks like there have still been some interesting new developments. In fact, it appears that the new Loki series could even be introducing the franchise’s first transgender character.
There have been several reports so far that seem to indicate Marvel’s desire to introduce a transgender character into their Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they all point to Sera – a character from the Marvel comic books that so far consists as the only major transgender character in said comics. And as reported by The Illuminerdi, a new casting call for the Loki series seems to indicate the inclusion of Sera.

It seems they’re searching for a male/female with an age range from 20 to 40. They will play a strong supporting character in all episodes of the season with options for the second season as well. As this information suggests, it’s likely Sera, who in the comics is part of a group of male wingless angels named the Anchorites. But Sera happens to identify as female, and thus if Disney and Marvel want to continue diversifying their characters – then Sera makes the perfect transgender candidate.
Of course, it’s also possible that Sera could wind up appearing in Thor: Love and Thunder. It’s an interesting time right now for the ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, so perhaps later in the year things will become clearer regarding Loki and whether or not it could include the transgender character Sera.
Tom Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as the titular Loki for the upcoming Disney Plus series. Meanwhile Sophia Di Martino is set to co-star as a female version of Loki. The series’ core director will be Kate Herron, with Ant-Man and the Wasp associate producer Kevin Wright acting as a supervising producer on the new series which takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Loki series is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in early 2021.
