Matt Reeves has started filming his highly anticipated take in the Caped Crusader with The Batman. This will be the 5th film adaptation for the Dark Knight, with 7 actors behind the cowl and as many directors behind the camera. The most successful version on the big screen is definitely Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. With Christian Bale as the Gotham vigilante, Nolan brought a realistic take to the superhero world. So realistic, in fact, that he brought his love of practical effects to the films. And, although Batman Begins debuted in theaters 15 years ago, we’re still finding out cool facts about the movie. Case in point: the latest BTS video posted online shows off a real and horrifying take on Batman.

Towards the end of the film, Batman confronts the Scarecrow as he tries to pollute Gotham’s water supply with his fear toxin. In turn, the Scarecrow gets a dose of his own medicine and enters his own nightmare state. In it, Batman becomes a demonic version of himself. This was a terrifying scene in the theaters, one that seemed to be done with special effects or CGI. However, this is not the case, and that makes it even more horrifying. The BTS video shows a fully suited Demon Bat, and it looks amazing. This cries for it’s own film, really. It was great look to the character and it makes me wish that it had gotten more screen time.
Practical effects like these really help a film feel grounded and real. Matt Reeves is looking to focus more on the ‘World’s Greatest Detective’ aspect of Batman in his film, so hopefully he goes for the practical route as well and gives fans an authentic take on the character. Maybe he should call up Nolan for some advice.
