If you’re a fan of the 2010 comedy film MacGruber, then you’re in luck, because a new television series based on the hit film has been officially announced to be in development. It appears that NBC’s streaming service Peacock will host the new series, and it is intended to directly follow the events of the original movie.
As explained by Variety, who have also revealed Will Forte is returning to star as the titular character:
“In MacGruber, after rotting in prison for over a decade, America’s ultimate hero and uber patriot MacGruber (played by Forte) is finally released. His mission: to take down a mysterious villain from his past—Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. With the entire world in the crosshairs, MacGruber, Vicki, and Piper must race against time to defeat the forces of evil, only to find that evil may be lurking within.”
Aside from starring in the new series, Will Forte is also executive producing alongside original film director Jorma Taccone and that Forte is even writing with him as well. And although she isn’t confirmed to return, we can imagine based on the synopsis that Kristen Wiig is also coming back. John Solomon is also writing and executive producing. Lorne Michaels, John Goldwyn, Andrew Singer, Erin David of Broadway Video will executive produce.
After several years of talk, it’s definitely surprising to see that MacGruber is finally getting a continuation. Especially when you consider that it’s an entire television series exclusive to NBC’s Peacock. The original film only grossed $9 million in theaters against a $10 million budget, so it goes to show how much being a dedicated fan can sometimes push a project to finally happen.
Stay tuned for more news on the MacGruber series as it develops.
