Update: Variety has released a report stating While Feige’s answer appeared to respond to the specific question about a trans character, two sources close to the studio tell Variety that Feige only intended to respond to the first part about LGBT+ characters, and he did not mean to imply that a trans character will be coming to the MCU “very soon.” The article below remains as written before this update.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently participated in a Q&A session at the New York Film Academy. The session involved quite a few exciting questions, regarding both the past and future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes the following question which specifically focused on whether or not we could expect more LGBT+ characters in the franchise’s future. Specifically, Kevin Feige was asked if we could ever expect to see a transgender character featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As it turns out, it seems to be a definite scenario.
“Yes. Absolutely. Yes. Very soon. In a movie we’re shooting right now.”
While there are a variety of Marvel movies currently in different stages of production, so it’s hard to pinpoint which film exactly Kevin Feige is referring to, there is a highly suspected possibility that it’s Thor: Love and Thunder. After all, that film includes Valkyrie, and it has been suggested that she could have a relationship with a transgender female superhero named Sera.
Of course, there are still plenty of other possibilities waiting about. And although they might not have transgender characters, there are still quite a few Marvel films in development which will be including other openly gay characters as well.
It seems diversity will be a common theme in Marvel movies going forward, so moviegoers should begin to expect all different types of superhero characters in the near future. We’ll likely be hearing more news soon as to which LGBT+ characters will be involved in future Marvel entries, so stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more information on that front.
