Spawning from the trio of Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Michael Bay, Bad Boys and its sequel are two wildly entertaining action movies. Much of that is thanks to the report of Smith and Lawrence, whose comedic banter meshed seamlessly with Michael Bay’s larger-than-life stylistic choices. Despite it being nearly 20 years since the series was on the big screen, the bad boys are returning with Bad Boys For Life.
While Michael Bay isn’t returning behind the director’s chair, both Smith and Lawrence are to star in this new offering. Check out the debut trailer along with the official synopsis:
Old-school cops Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) team up to take down the vicious leader of a Miami drug cartel. Newly created elite team AMMO of the Miami police department along with Mike and Marcus go up against the ruthless Armando Armas.
This new trailer features its fair share of promising and questionable aspects. It’s great to see Smith and Lawrence interacting together, especially since Lawrence has been relatively inactive over the past few years. Their rapport is still just as bitingly funny as it was 20 years ago and will surely be this sequel’s strongest trait. New directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah look to be bringing some of Bay’s kinetic style choices behind the camera back into the fold, which is good for keeping continuity for the franchise.
That being said, the excess of shaky camera footage is troublesome, as that is a tendency that is all too common for modern action films. Even with the original duo back, I think it’s fair to wonder if this third film can capture the lightning-in-a-bottle spirit of the original films. We’ll find out when the film is released on January 17, 2020.
