The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 (I die a little inside whenever I have to put both a colon and dash in movie title) took first place for third weekend in a row on the first weekend of December. The concluding chapter of the wildly popular Hunger Games series took in $18.6 million for a total gross of $227 million in seventeen days. While this is a great number, it does seem to be running out of steam faster that Lionsgate would like (the fact that it dropped over 64% in grosses from last weekend is little disheartening). At this point, it trails previous franchise lowpoint Mockingjay Part 1 by $31 million.
The Christmas themed horror-comedy Krampus defied most expectations (Box Office Mojo’s Brad Brevet had predicted a mere $6.5 million for it) and delivered a very solid start in second place with $16 million. I don’t really have any similar movies to compare it to (Christmas horror/comedies don’t tend to get released in 2,902 theaters) but the budget on this thing is only $15 million so I’m calling it a hit.
The Rocky spinoff Creed retook third place to the tune of $15.5 million. Two weeks in, and the film is already the highest grossing film of Michael B. Jordan’s career (beating Chronicle and some comic book movie). Look for it to pass Rocky Balboa next week, Rocky II sometime later, and Rocky, Rocky III, and Rocky IV after that if you’re feeling optimistic.
We head to fourth and the folks at Disney/PIXAR let out a collective gasp. The Good Dinosaur dropped a terrible 60.4% from last weekend. This is the largest second weekend drop for any PIXAR film and since The Good Dinosaur had one of the lowest opening weekends for the brand, its cumulative total is only $75.9 million. Yikes. It looks to me like this has a good chance to end up being the lowest grossing film that PIXAR’s ever had (currently that title belongs to A Bug’s Life which was released all the way back in 1998 when theater tickets were about $4 cheaper). Thankfully Inside Out was a massive hit ($851.6 million worldwide) so don’t expect an “Is PIXAR Dead?” article from PeelTheOrange.net anytime soon.

That’s it for me! Leave us a comment if you’ve got anything to say about the state of cinema or if have any predictions for that silly looking Chris Hemsworth movie next weekend!
