If you weren’t afraid of clowns before, IT: Chapter 2 is going to try its damnedest to make sure you do now. The remake to the classic Stephen King miniseries from the 90s, 2017’s IT helped reinvent the horror movie genre, and became one of the top five highest grossing horror films of all time, along with other genre shaping films like Get Out, Blair Witch, and The Exorcist. But, while it was gory and brutal and terrifying, it held back in many ways, including cutting some controversial scenes. Now, the sequel looks to up the ante, if the official rating tells us anything.
While the first movie was R rated, the sequel is getting the equivalent of a Hard R, based on the MPAA’s reasoning. The first film was rated based on ‘violence/horror, bloody images, and for language’. The sequel’s rating comes with the description, ‘disturbing violent and bloody images throughout, pervasive language, and some crude sexual material’.
Set 27 years after the first, the Losers’ Club reunites to take down evil once again. But, it is going to be much worse for them along the way. The trauma from their first experience with Pennywise has affected them all in different, but equally severe, ways. And, of course, you have to raise the stakes for a horror sequel, so it almost goes without saying that this film should be far more terrifying and brutal.
It is definitely going to be interesting to see just how aggressive this film is going to be. We have heard from cast interviews that it was horrifying just to film a lot of these scenes, so seeing that on the big screen is going to be next level. It may be best to invest in some adult diapers incase you crap yourself in terror.
