The sequel to Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man: Homecoming that was released in 2017 is coming to theatres at the beginning of next month and early critic reviews are in. After the success of the last movie in which Holland plays the hero it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the reviews so far for Spider-Man: Far From Home are mostly pretty great. Homecoming got a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and so far Far From Home has done a little better.
At the time of writing the score on Rotten Tomatoes was a super impressive 93% and the critic consensus reads “A breezily unpredictable blend of teen romance and superhero action, Spider-Man: Far from Home stylishly sets the stage for the next era of the MCU.”
Here’s what the critics had to say:
The Good…
- The Wrap: “Spider-Man: Far From Home becomes an entertaining example of what we used to call “a summer movie.” You know, back before they started giving us a bright, loud comic-book adaptation like this (but rarely this good) on a weekly basis.”
- Entertainment Weekly: “Some digital effects look good in a boring way, and then some digital effects look bad in a perfect way. “Is this real?” asks Spider-Man. In the end, I really didn’t know. Far From Home succeeds with an unusual, troubling virtue: The best parts are the most fake.”
- Den of Geek: “Spider-Man: Far From Home is way more than an Endgame epilogue or a Phase Three coda, though. Instead, it’s a lively adventure reminiscent of what superhero movies looked like before expanded universes were even a thing.”
- Cinema Blend: “The 21st century world has never really been given an opportunity to miss Spider-Man on the big screen, as Far From Home is now the 10th feature in which the character has appeared in the last 17 years – but with films like this audiences aren’t going to grow tired of him any time soon. It does leave much to be desired in the surprise department, but what it lacks in effective twists it mostly makes up for with impressive character drama, and enthralling, exciting, energetic entertainment.”
- Slash Film: “It’s the warmth that drives the film, and hammers down just how nice this film is. It’s a pleasant and lovely coming-of-age story first, a wild, funny, and cleverly executed comic book story second.”
The Bad….
- New York Post: “Through all this, you can see director Jon Watts and the filmmakers struggling to replicate the magic of their first film.”
- Reel Honest Reviews: “Spider-Man: Far From Home, even with its charming subplot of teen love and angst, is just another super hero movie in a world where I need Captain No More to save me from seeing another film in this genre. Teens will love it as will those who are invested in this universe, but if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.”
- Vanity Fair: “Far From Home tries to make a case for the littler things, deftly employing Holland and Zendaya’s fumbling chemistry and giving side characters goofy, winning business to play. (I want a whole movie about Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May buying her fabulous wardrobe.) In reality, though, that scrappier stuff is a smokescreen meant to cover up all the familiar brand-advancing mechanics.”
- Hollywood Reporter: “At its best as a look at a few awkward teenagers amusingly coming out of their shells during a summer tour through Europe, this second installment in the latest live-action Spider-Man reboot founders as it stomps through picturesque old cities in a series of ill-motivated and less-than-awesome action set-pieces.”
So it certainly looks like this sequel to Homecoming is a massive success with critics – and fans don’t have long now before they can make their own minds up about it. Spider-Man: Far From Home is being released in theaters on July 2.
