Ever since the release of Iron Man in 2008, Marvel Studios has been steadily building how many films they release in a year. Throughout Phase 1 and most of Phase 2, they only released one movie a year. With the last two films of Phase 2 and the first half of Phase 3, the moved it up to two a year. Starting in 2018, Marvel switched to 3 films a year, culminating with this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Now, it looks like the studio is progressing to four MCU flicks a year, starting in 2021.
Looking at Disney’s upcoming release schedule, there are three unnamed Marvel movies coming in 2021, February 12th, May 7th, and November 5th. But, what’s not on the list is the fourth MCU film, Sony’s third Spidey film. Now, what is not certain is whether Marvel will continue this pace after 2021 or go back to three a year. But, from all accounts, 2021 will be the Year of Marvel.
Looking at the dates, it seems likely that either Black Panther 2 or Captain Marvel 2 will take the May slot, Shang-Chi or Eternals will get the February slot, and Dr. Strange 2 will take the November slot, where it’s first film was very successful. As far as when the third Spider-Man movie will play, nothing is set yet, but it is likely that Sony will stick with the summer release.
Whatever films hit the theaters, fans are sure to see them all in droves, knowing Marvel’s nearly flawless reputation. Keep an eye out for more updates after San Diego Comi-Con, where Marvel Studios will be at Hall H to announce the future of the MCU.
