Orion’s upcoming remake of the horror classic Child’s Play continues to both pay its respects to the original movies while also introducing new themes and concepts. The movie strays away from the possessed doll narrative of the original Child’s Play saga, and instead recreates Chucky as a robotic AI gone mad.
While the film has had a variety of promotional trailers and images released, we’ve only just barely been getting to see better looks at the actual Chucky doll in the film. The doll, which is from the Buddi toy line rather than the Good Guys as in the original series, had gotten quite a bit of criticism from fans.
Perhaps this is the reason they’re now showing it off more – and whether that’s a good thing or not is up to you. But it does have the interesting advantage of being a mostly practical puppet this time – and Orion has released an all-new video showing how it was done!
And, now that you’ve had some behind-the-scenes action, be sure to watch the new TV spot which gives more screen time to the Mark Hamill-voiced doll.
I will say it’s an interesting way to do a remake, especially if you had to do one at all. But it just lacks some of the subtle creepiness the first movie was known for. Chucky in that movie slowly transgressed into a more humanlike doll, slowly getting a receding hairline and an ugly mono brow. Here we get a Chucky whose eyes flash red like he’s Skynet’s next model Terminator. Oh well, times are changing.
In the film…
“A mother (Aubrey Plaza) gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.”
Child’s Play will hit theaters on June 21, 2019.
