Avengers: Endgame has proven to be the blockbuster juggernaut it was anticipated to be. The 3 hour epic is chock full of masterful and rememberable moments, showing a thrilling and fantastic conclusion to 11 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Cap wielding Mjolnir to Professor Hulk to the long awaited ‘Avengers Assemble’ line, there are countless moments that fans adored. But, one moment came from a debate that many didn’t even really expect, but was all in the back of our subconscious; Who can actually wield the Infinity Gauntlet in the MCU?
One character, in particular, is one fans would have like to have seen wear it, and that’s Captain America. During the ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ and ‘Infinity War’ comic book storylines, fans got to see Cap wield the gauntlet and its massive powers. However, in the MCU, it is established that the power of all 6 Infinity Stones together is not for everyone. The power that comes from it would kill most, and even greatly injure the most powerful of beings. Thanos used the stones twice, and it almost killed them. Hulk, who ultimately won the ‘Who will wear it’ debate, was permanently injured (and he has a power base that is similar to the Stones’ radiation).
So, what if Cap had donned the gauntlet? Avengers: Endgame Writer Christopher Markus answered it with a simple and abrupt line during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I think Steve would be toast.”
Pretty simply put, Rogers wouldn’t be able to handle the all-consuming power. Just like what happened to Tony Stark, he would perish. Now, for those fans who want to say, “But Stark doesn’t have a Super Soldier Serum running through him!”, I say this: While he may not be a “Super Soldier”, his armor actually helps deal with the power surge better. Cap isn’t even bulletproof. That power would have not only killed him, but possibly faster than it did Stark, giving him zero chance of a goodbye.
However, knowing Steve Rogers’ will, he would have, without hesitation, put on that glove and did whatever he had to to end this conflict and bring everyone back.
