Last year, it was reported that 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langford had been cast in a mysterious role in the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame. At the time many speculated that the actress may have been portraying Kate Bishop, Clint Barton’s young protégé. (Spoilers follow). However, when the film hit theaters last month, Langford was nowhere to be seen. Now thanks to a new interview with the film’s directors, we have an idea on just what happened.
In a recent interview with MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the directing duo revealed that Langford was actually cast as an older version of Tony Stark‘s daughter, Morgana, in the film before the scenes were ultimately cut. Speaking to the host, Joe Russo explained.
“There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.”
For those who don’t remember, the ‘way station’ that Russo is referring to is the scene in Avengers: Infinity War in which Thanos is visited by a younger version of Gamora who questions what Snapping half the universe out of existence has cost him. It sounds as though the scene in Endgame would be similar, with Morgan appearing to Tony after he uses the Infinity Stones to Snap Thanos’ forces away.
Joe Russo went on to add:
“The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant, But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie.”
As for why the scene was cut, Anthony Russo explained that it was due to several reasons, however one of the biggest was that it didn’t have the effect that they intended in an earlier test screening of the film. He went on to add.
“What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter, So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level.”
This definitely makes sense and whilst it does give Tony a chance to know that what he did was worth it, it ultimately wasn’t required – as the scene we had worked well enough on its own. Hopefully, we will be able to see this scene somewhere on the home media release, but it also means that Langford is free to take on another role in the future.
