Think of any possession movie. Now think of any science fiction movie. Good. Now, blend the two and you get? Brightburn.
With his newest project, James Gunn mends edge-of-your-seat suspense with frightfully realistic horror aspects to exhibit a different side of a surprising visitor. Brightburn, debuting in May of 2019, is a science-fiction horror film following the story of a family and their adopted son; however, this son didn’t come from the orphanage down the road – he crash-landed here on Earth from some other world.

James Gunn is most notable for his work in the superhero industry – most recently, the Guardians of the Galaxy duality. It’s nice to see a change of pace in Gunn’s production, and his background in superhero and sci-fi can play major roles in his development of a horror film. Brightburn could potentially be compared to other noteworthy sci-fi horror films like that of Alien, Predator, and more modern names like 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Personally, I am a huge fan of psychological and paranormal horror films – and although I do not have a wide variety of science-fiction in my collection, I feel that aspects of the science-fiction genre will play a huge role in this film. Science-fiction connotes a sort of “not-knowingness,” and unknown – leaving the audience and producers up to their imagination to decide what could possibly be out there.
The art of blending what the trailer foreshadows as a sort of possession meets alien-like life form leaves one huge question: Will this newest addition to their family grow up to be a normal little boy? Or will this young couple, starring Elizabeth Banks and David Denman, quickly figure out parenthood wasn’t all they expected it to be?
Look out for Brightburn – coming to theaters May 2019.
