Christmas is one of the most joyful times of the year, which also makes it ripe for anti-Christmas films that use the holiday as a motif for their more sinister intentions. Whether its a black comedy like Bad Santa or a horror film like Krampus, this ideal has been played out with in the past and worked with surprising degrees of success. Dial Code Santa Claus however takes this ideal to a new extreme, in which a boy is forced to take on a killer Santa Claus.
Check out the film’s new trailer along with its synopsis from the Alamo Drafthouse:
The film’s synopsis reads:
AGFA restored DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS was made a year before HOME ALONE. But it is what happens when you take HOME ALONE, RAMBO, excessive blood and style and set the blender on maximum.
It’s always fun when old genre movies are rescued from obscurity and given a new life, especially with a concept as outrageous as this film’s. This trailer is admittedly very goofy, but I think thats very much intentional with a genre film like this. Self-awareness can be a benefit for many genre films like this, but it can also be a curse when movies are too self-refreintional.
The film is being released by the Alamo Drafthouse, who typically revive campy films like this for midnight showings. While the theater chain is well-known for the high-quality theatrical experiences they offer, the company has made some noticeable steps into film distribution. As long as they keep digging up movies like this, I will be happy to support them.
