Fans are still dealing with the passing of comic book’s greatest icon, Stan Lee. He made such an impact on so many of us, not just with the characters he created, or his rock star-like persona, but with the messages and good will he portrayed at all times. He always wanted people to see the best in the world, and to be their own superhero. He has graced us with so many legendary characters with real life problems, like Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, and so, so many more. He was also the comic book world’s Alfred Hitchcock, having cameos in nearly every big and small screen version of Marvel Comics, and even some cameos outside of that world.
Now, his final few cameos are upon us, with upcoming films like Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. But, his cameo in the animated Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, may just be his most poignant and emotional one yet.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
Early on in the film, we have to deal with the Spider-Man (Peter Parker) of Mile Morales’ Earth has died at the hands of Kingpin. New York is in deep mourning, and Miles is dealing with not only seeing Peter die, but his newly acquired powers as well as his promise to Peter to finish what he started and stop Kingpin’s plan. Miles decides to buy a Spider-man Halloween costume to use as his first uniform from a comic book shop. Lo and behold, Stan Lee runs the shop. And, as Miles goes to check out, Stan says one line that had nearly the entire theater in tears.
“We will miss him. He was a friend of mine, you know?”
Man, you would have thought we were all cutting onions in that theater. But, the rest of the interaction has a deeper meaning as well. Miles asks Lee if he can return the costume if it doesn’t fit. “It always fits… Eventually…” is how Lee responds, before the camera slowly pans to the “No Returns, No Refunds, EVER!” sign. A powerful line about how we all find our inner hero eventually, but let’s talk about that sign.
This is now one of my favourite Stan Lee cameo. I loved the tribute they gave at the end of the movie. #spiderverse #Spoilers pic.twitter.com/Xq3C0SquB5

While it may not have been meant to be more than a little joke about how “it better fit, cause you can’t bring it back”, it has an unexpected extra message to it. Lee is gone, but not forgotten. While we can’t get him back, he will live on forever, in our hearts. We all get one chance at life, so we have to make the best of it.
There was also a message about him in the end-credits:
More than any sad part in the whole movie, the part where I was most sad was when the Stan Lee part showed up. Damn. / Spiderman Into The Spider Verse pic.twitter.com/lRxUGZ76eS

All I can say is, thank you, Mr. Lee. You have had such an impact on my life, and the lives of millions of others. Your message will never be forgotten. Excelsior!
