Avengers: Endgame already has the most watched trailer of all time, unsurprisingly. The anticipation for this film has become immeasurable, with fans losing their minds over the lack of information. So, when the trailer finally dropped, of course millions of people’s minds were blown. But, in all reality, it didn’t reveal too much more than what we already knew. One thing it did seem to put to rest, however, was the fan theory about a 5 year time jump.
Many fans began to speculate about a 5 year time jump after supposed “insiders” on Twitter made up the rumor, based on “news from a source”. Hell, we here at ScreenGeek even bought into it a bit. However, these same “insiders” are more often wrong than right (although they delete all of their wrong tweets, so their percentages are inflated…), yet many people still take their word as gossip.
One such “insider” even insisted that the trailer proved their 5 year time jump “insider info” true, before realizing it actually doesn’t, and then subsequently deleted all of his time jump tweets. Now, said “insider” has flipped his script, and is actually taking digs at people still on the “time jump” bandwagon.
This trailer doesn’t for sure give an exact time-frame, and we’re sure a little bit of time has passed, as Captain America has now shaved, and they’re back from Wakanda to the Avengers HQ in New York, but there are many clues as to the time being some time shortly after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Starting at the beginning of the trailer, we see Tony Stark recording a final message to Pepper Potts. While some say he’s on a separate ship from Nebula, and some say otherwise, what we do know is that food and water ran out 4 days ago.
Now, it is extremely unlikely that a ship would have a year’s worth of provisions, much less 5 years worth, so it’s more than likely just a couple of weeks, maybe 2 months, tops.
Now, jump to shots of the Avengers HQ. While the “insider” pointed out that the lawn was disheveled, this person apparently doesn’t own a home or do lawn work. While the yard doesn’t look great, it certainly doesn’t have 5 years worth of growth going on. The grass would be waist high, at the very least. No, the grass looks like it has a couple weeks of growth, tops. So, either the landscapers didn’t die in The Decimation and have kept it up on a monthly basis for the last 5 years, or there just wasn’t a huge time jump.
Now, for the biggest hint that not much time has passed. It’s the emotional toll still present. Just look at the remaining heroes. They are beyond distraught, like this traumatic event JUST happened. While rumors have circulated that Black Widow goes back to her red hair (just look at the leaked concept art for the film), she still has her blonde bob in the trailer. And, while this would be something really hard to get over, I seriously doubt that these heroes would still be in the beginning stages of severe mourning 5 YEARS LATER!
While these clues help quell the “5 year time jump” rumors, some time has passed. As we see from Ant-Man’s appearance at the gate, he’s driving Luis’ van. We know that Ant-Man and his friends were based in San Francisco. The Avengers are in upstate New York. Having made a similar drive myself, it’s a several day drive. Now, with 50% less traffic, it might be a bit quicker, but it’s still gonna take 4-5 days of constant driving.
There is also the supposed casting of an older Cassie, Scott Lang’s daughter. But, considering that time travel via the Quantum Realm should play a big part in the movie, this may just be a future Cassie. Hey, wouldn’t it be crazy if Cassie, in the future, is able to access the Quantum Realm (maybe as her superhero alter ego, Stinger) and is the one who frees the trapped Scott?
The reality is, we don’t for sure know much of anything when it comes to this film. Disney, Marvel Studios, and everyone directly involved have kept a level of secrecy typically reserved for the CIA or Area 51. So, I guess we’ll just have to wait until Marvel wants us to actually know something about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 Finale before we can confirm anything.
