Creed II has hit the theaters like a knockout punch, getting critical acclaim for its continuation of the phenomenon that is the Rocky franchise. But now, the man behind the iconic character that started it all and became a champion for the underdog, Sylvester Stallone, is hanging up the gloves for good.
Posted on his Instagram account, Sly gives a very emotional goodbye video to his beloved scraper from Philly. Filmed during what is seemingly a cast and crew wrap bonfire, Sly acknowledges that his time as Rocky is over, and that the mantle is passed to Micheal B. Jordan, who plays Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed from the original Rocky films. Sly thought that this last take on the character, Rocky Balboa, in 2006 was a fitting end to his story, but when he was approached about the first Creed film, he saw a new spin for the universe he had created.
Now, after taking the world further in Creed II, Stallone is ready to hang up his gloves and pass the baton onto Jordan, who can continue the Rocky legacy with new problems, new scenarios, and a modern twist. And, although it’s not an easy choice, Stallone understands that not everything can last forever.
“It’s been my ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Though it breaks my heart, Sadly all things must pass… and end. Keep punching, I love you kind and generous people, and Rocky loves you too.”
Fans of the Oscar winner need not be too sad, however, as Sly is returning to the Rambo franchise as the titular character with Rambo 5: Last Blood.
