Filming started for Sony’s remake of The Grudge back in June, and a set photo confirming the name change to the simpler Grudge was shared. We had previously reported that the movie had been scheduled for release on August 16 next year, but in an unexpected move the release has been brought forward to June 21st, 2019. The new summer release date puts the movie head-to-head with the release of Toy Story 4, with shark based horror-sequel 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter being released the following week.
This new installment will be one of many belonging to the franchise that spans 12 movies, 2 shorts, some graphic novels and a video game. The 2004 version of The Grudge was a remake of the Japanese movie Ju-On. Both of those were set in Japan but it has been reported that the upcoming re-imagining of the story will take place in America.

The movie is set to star Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye, Betty Gilpin, Jacki Weaver, William Sadler, and Frankie Faison. Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi will produce for Ghost House, while Kahane and Erin Westerman are executive producing for Good Universe.
Actress Lin Shaye is no stranger to the genre after starring in Insidious, and she even confessed that Grudge is the scariest movie that she has starred in. She said “It’s the scariest movie I’ve ever been a part of, not even maybe. And it’s the scariest part I’ve ever had, bar none.”
Comments from Lin Shaye certainly set the bar high for this reboot, if what she says is right im sure it will be a treat for fans of the genre. Although the 2002 movie was pretty unsettling in its own right and 2004’s American remake wasn’t far behind. It will certainly be interesting to see a fresh take on the story, however whether it improves it or not will remain to be seen.
