Captain Marvel is the next movie due out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it is highly anticipated by fans worldwide. There is also a lot of mystery surrounding the film because of the timeframe that it takes place in. Set in the 1990’s, Captain Marvel will technically be the first super-powered being since Captain America’s tenure during WWII, not Iron Man. So, why has no one heard of her until now? Well, a key line in Captain America: Civil War may just give us the answer.
Thanks to Reddit user CaptainDeadpool172’s keen ear, a seemingly throwaway line during Tony Stark’s first meeting with Peter Parker could be the key to Captain Marvel’s inclusion into the MCU, right under our noses. As Stark shows Parker the Spider-Man YouTube video, Peter calls it fake. Tony responds with “like the UFO’s over Phoenix”. Now, this was seemingly just a nod to the famous Phoenix Lights, a group of strange, unidentified lights seen by thousands back in 1997.

This could very just be a nod to a unique situation that is also a viral sensation, like Spidey’s YouTube video. But, if you consider the time of the sightings, the late 90’s, it could stand for something more. It could actually be a government (S.H.I.E.L.D.) cover up of a Kree/Skrull battle over Earth! With Tony having spent some much time with S.H.I.E.L.D. (including hacking their systems), he could be aware of at least the cover up being so much more than an internet hoax. Thus, he compares Peter’s “fake” Spidey video to another “fake” video of an actual event.
This is, of course, purely speculation at the moment, but this theory seems to fit. The only way to be sure, though, is to watch Captain Marvel when it comes out next spring, and see if Phoenix is one of the settings for the film.
