Whilst the Marvel Cinematic Universe is making great strides in regards to promoting diversity, one aspect in which it is lacking is the representation of transgender actors and actresses. Now, one of the most prolific transgender celebrities has thrown her hat into the ring to star in a future film – none other than Caitlyn Jenner.
Variety recently ran an issue of being transgender in Hollywood, in which they spoke with matriarch of the Kardashian clan, Caitlyn Jenner, to which she revealed how she would be more than happy to join the franchise as a villain. Speaking to the interviewer she revealed how her dream role would be
“In a Marvel movie, I want to play the baddest-ass lady you’ve ever seen in your life, They got the wicked queen or the wicked lady. Just do the makeup and the outfit. And I got the deep voice.”
Whilst she may only be known for reality television these days, back before her transition she starred in several made for television movies as well as taking over from lead Erik Estrada for six episodes of the comedy series CHiPs. This wouldn’t be the actresses first potential foray into the world of superhero movies however, as it was reported that Jenner actually auditioned for the role of Superman in the 1978 film of the same name before eventually losing out to Christopher Reeves.
She was ultimately thankful for not getting the role as she was dealing with issues living as a man at the time, something which would only have been exacerbated by portraying one of the most masculine heroes around. She explained.
“Four months later [after winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics] they call up: ‘Would you be interested in a screen test for Superman?’ It was just too much for me. I would have gone down as the most macho guy in the world, and that’s not me. It’s not even close to me.”
It’s interesting to see how different things would have been would be had Jenner portrayed the Man of Steel instead of Reeves, but there is till chance for the actress to appear in a film, although given her limited experience in acting, it would be hard to imagine choosing her over a more qualified transgender actress. Only time will tell.
