The Disney/Fox merger is nearly complete, which means Marvel is getting most of its characters, including the X-Men and all mutants, back under their umbrella. But, many are wondering how exactly are they going to integrate a whole subspecies of humanity in mutants into an already fleshed out universe that is the MCU? Well, a quote from a report this past week detailing the issues behind the scenes of X-Men: Dark Phoenix may just hold the answer.
One of the upcoming films in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is The Eternals, a group of accelerated humans created by Celestials who become heroes. They also could be the link to bring mutants into the MCU. More specifically, it could be an element that they either create or have access to that could be the next step in human evolution.
Now, this would mean that mutants would be new to the universe, which we mean some major reworking of origins of many well-known characters.
The biggest would be Wolverine, as he served alongside Captain America in WWII as well as served in all the wars before in America.
Another option would be to use this element to unlock the mutants’ potential, similar to the Terrigan Mist that unlocks the Inhumans’ abilities, but that would still create issues. Ideally, there would need to be a way to have mutants already exist in the MCU, but not necessarily known. The Eternals could still be involved here. This is a bit of a more wild theory, but stick with me here…
The Eternals have their home on Jupiter’s moon, Titan. They are “evolved humans”, with their powers coming from the evolution accelerating experiments of the Celestials. This could be how Marvel explains mutants, with the Eternals being classified as mutants or as the next step above mutants in the evolutionary scale. But, maybe they’re not alone on Titan.
Maybe the first step in this experiment is mutants and they, too, live on Titan, before coming to Earth. However, some of the first experiments could already be on Earth, like say a nearly ageless mutant with immense healing abilities and a feral kinship with nature.
Someone well trained and who could possibly stay hidden from all detection like a Bigfoot or something. This could explain Wolverine to the MCU. Someone who did fight alongside Captain America, but disappeared after the war and went into hiding. Sabretooth could also be introduced this way.
Some sightings of them could fall under myths and legends, which is why there are varying reports of a kind Bigfoot and a murderous Bigfoot, along with varying heights. They both could avoid detection from even S.H.I.E.L.D. with their abilities, and spend their days either living life or hunting each other down.
Regardless of how they do it, I have the utmost confidence in Marvel Studios picking the right time and the right way to bring all these characters into the fold.
