Ant-Man and The Wasp has finally hit theaters, and is yet another hit for Marvel Studios. And, of course, like all other Marvel movies in the MCU, there is a mid-credits scene. And, boy, is it a doozy. Here’s a breakdown of that very scene.
***WARNING!!! MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!! ***
As the film ends, Janet Van Dyne (the original Wasp) has been saved from the Quantum Realm via Pym’s Quantum Tunnel, but she’s not quite the same woman she was when she went in. She has ‘evolved” some new abilities, mainly the ability to “Quantum Heal” people. However, she uses up quite a bit of what seems to be a finite ability when she heals Ghost from her fatal quantum phasing, effectively removing the pain of Ghost’s cells being individually ripped apart and smashed back together constantly.
Ghost was never truly bad person, as we learn through the film, but really just looking for a cure from her infliction due to an accident in her youth.
Everyone is safe and happily ever after as the credits begin to roll. Then, the mid-credits scene begins. Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne have developed a smaller, portable version of the Quantum Tunnel (inside Luis’ van, nonetheless). They, along with Hope, plan to help Scott jump into the Quantum Realm to gather up “Healing Quantum Energy” to help heal their “new friend” Ghost continue to heal and live. Scott goes subatomic and enters the Quantum Realm.
With constant communication topside, he collects the healing energy and awaits the countdown to his return to the normal world. Hope begins the countdown at “five, four, three…”
Suddenly there’s static and then silence in Lang’s headset. He thinks they’re joking, but suddenly realizes that he isn’t getting a response. It is as this moment that they cut back to the real world, and we see that Janet Van Dyne, Hank Pym, and Hope Van Dyne have ALL TURNED TO DUST AFTER THE SNAP FROM THANOS! This means that Scott is trapped in the Quantum Realm and THAT’S ALL YOU GET TO SEE!
Now, this was quite a shock to see! Especially since Evangeline Lilly has talked, at length, about what it was like to film Avengers 4. But, it does explain her absence from the leaked concept art we saw last month. But it is also a shock as they just brought Janet back, only to kill her off immediately.
But, of course, there has to be some kind of solution to all of this and some way to bring back our fallen heroes, but with the writers and directors of Infinity War stating that all the deaths are real and permanent, we will just have to wait and see in May of 2019 to find out exactly what is going to happen with all these disintegrated characters.
There’s also a scene with a giant ant playing the drums at the very end of the credits.
