In a recent sit down with MTV News, writer and producer Simon Kinberg said that the planned 2017 sequel for Fantastic Four could still be a reality. That’s right, even though it bombed both financially and critically and featured a TON of drama regarding Fox and the director – FOX is still exploring the idea of making a sequel:
“I’m really focused on the next one,” Kinberg said. “I do believe there is a great ’Fantastic Four’ movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is. We’re figuring out what that movie would be. I’d like that to happen.”
I’m not sure that this would be a good idea for a few reasons. It seems that most of the fans want FOX to let the rights go back to Marvel or make a deal with Marvel to bring the characters into the MCU. The box office receipts (a $100 million dollar loss) seem to reflect that as well. Kinberg commented on the fan reaction as well:
“I was obviously disappointed,” he continued. “I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”
He also commented on the behind the scenes drama:
“I’ve been on plenty of happy movies that don’t turn out to be very good movies, I’ve been on a lot of unhappy, difficult sets that turn out to be great movies. There was a lot of attention on the process of making that movie. It’s hard, when you’re making a movie, movies are hard to make. It’s just the reality.”
Only time will tell what will happen with the Fantastic Four, but for now, it seems that FOX is unwilling to give up on the property – or give it back to Marvel Studios.
