It’s no surprise that Avengers: Infinity War was going to be jam packed with so much information, that it may take more than one viewing to take it all in. However, it is surprising that the screenwriters behind the amazing event hold regret to some of the decisions made.
When speaking to the New York Times about the process behind writing the film and how to keep people attracted to the idea for second part, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely gave descriptive opinions they had about the entire project.
The screenwriters explained that they wanted the first film to end with Thanos’ snap and if that part had been pushed to the second film, it would be a continuation of exactly what we had seen in Infinity War. Originally, it was written for ‘Part 2’ but the writers really wanted to go out with a snap? Markus had some good reasons for it:
“It’s really, I think, difficult to predict where we go next.”
However, the big news is that the writers disliked the idea of using 6 stones. Dislike could be the wrong word, but they would not have chosen that amount if they had control over the project from the start. McFeely explains:
“Had we started from scratch, we would not have chosen six damn MacGuffins. That’s not that helpful. It was difficult to get that all in.”
Alongside wishing that they were able to write it differently from the start, the writers went on to explain that they still believe that Infinity War is its own film, where the Villain is the Victor and they are well aware that fans are angry at them. Markus said:
“We still argue that ‘Infinity War’ is its own, complete film, it’s just the one where the bad guy wins.”
If Markus and McFeely would have left stones out of their writing, it begs the question on which stones? Which ones were less important to the story than the others? How would they have approached the entire project without them and would we feel different about the entire film.
While there are no answers to these questions, it does spark an entire topic that fans can begin to debate over, and maybe we will get some fan theories on Reddit or Twitter soon!
