Avengers 4, according to Avengers: Infinity War screenwriter Christopher Markus, will be a much different movie than most Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are actually expecting it to be. In a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the writer gave the following details:
“…doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is. Also… (the deaths are) real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.”
Time manipulation has evidently made its presence known so far in the MCU. Sparingly so though – and done extremely well between Doctor Strange’s bargain over Dormammu and Thanos’ reversal of Vision’s death to then acquire the final stone. The fans of the MCU now know that Thanos snapped away half of the universe – so it’s fair to anticipate some more potential time play to perhaps fix this. Especially considering a bargain between Doctor Strange and Thanos was met for the time stone.
However, Marvel will be 22 movies into this journey by the time we see a true conclusion to this first main chapter of the universe. It would be utterly underwhelming to undo the poignant choices that were made previously. Markus’ writing partner Stephen McFeely had this to also say about next year’s Avengers film:
“I think Infinity War is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.”
It’s important to remember that these two Avengers films are “clearly connected”. Together, it will become a full story. That means Avengers 4 isn’t out to necessarily undo it’s essential first half. It will continue going forward with the story. We have been left with the original core Avengers for a purpose in this coming story; it’s the final stand for them.
It has been made clear that Avengers 4 will deal with past events of the MCU due to leaked set photos. Is this time travel? Doubtful. The Russo Brothers have heavily hinted towards the B.A.R.F. technology of Captain America: Civil War being a big player for in the next installment.
Marvel has a habit of lying to keep things under wraps but it isn’t worth all this work to hide an easy way out for our heroes in such an important concluding chapter.
