One of the downsides of comics being primarily aimed at men is that women are often times, highly objectified. You just need to look at any comic drawn before…..well, just look at any comic and you’ll see any assortment of cleavage, skimpy costumes or provocative poses. Unfortunately that hasn’t changed at all in the leap to the big screen, and one Avengers: Infinity War star isn’t too impressed. Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen.
In a recent interview with Elle, Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the franchise explained what she found most disappointing with her costume – the cleavage. She told the interviewer.
“It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them. Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett [Johansson] does. I would like to cover up a bit… It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like, wow, I’m the only one who has cleavage, and that’s a constant joke because they haven’t really evolved my superhero costume that much, But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so…oh, it’s horrible, it’s so horrible.”
To be fair, she should be thankful that she isn’t wearing the same thing that her counterpart on the page wears, seeing as that is little more than a lingerie and a headband. Even the suit that she wore in the New Avengers scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron had far more skin on display than she has in this film.
Black Widow is a character who has undergone a big change in costumes over the years, earlier films would lean more heavily on the sex appeal of the character than they do now, similarly Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is completely skipping her skimpier costume in favor of her modern costume. Maybe Scarlet Witch will receive an upgrade in the future, much to the dismay of all the middle aged men dragged to the film by their kids.
If you want to check out the cleavage in question, you can catch it in Avengers: Infinity War in theatres now.
