Thanos maybe one of the Marvel Universe‘s biggest threats, but in the eyes of the character’s creator, Jim Starlin, it’s the comic book giant themselves who are the biggest villains. In fact the veteran comic writer had some interesting words to say on the matter.
The issues arose recently when Marvel Comics decided to release a monthly Thanos series with Donny Cates at the helm, which according to Starlin, bears a similar plot to a graphic novel he intended to write. While he doesn’t believe anybody to be stealing his idea, he does claim in an interview with Vulture that the publisher had plenty of time to fix it. He believed Marvel to be ‘undermining‘ his work by releasing Cates’ series first.
Speaking of the rift and the publisher he explained:
“I’m not an angry person, which you can probably hear from just me talking to you, but Marvel tends to bring out the worst in me, at times.”
This isn’t the first time that Starlin and Marvel have parted ways, over his forty year career, he has quit a total of six times. However he reveals that this last dispute was particularly rough, going on to say:
“I’m not working for them anymore and this time, I think that it’s for good, Because this last [dispute] was exceedingly bad.”
Here’s hoping that the two do eventually make amends, especially with his creation about received a whole load of new fans with the release of Avengers: Infinity War later this week. Starlin also makes it clear that it’s not Marvel Studios and the MCU that he has a problem with – as he did initially ask the directors of the film, Joe and Anthony Russo, about a cameo in the upcoming three-quel. To which they responded with,
“We’ve got your close up ready, Mr. Starlin.”
You can check out the Mad Titan when he takes on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this Thursday in Avengers: Infinity War.
