Avengers: Infinity War has officially been given a rating – and it will probably surprise a lot of you to know that it’s been rated R for graphic brutal sexuality and pervasive strong language – as well as bloody violence! Obviously, if that was the case, it would be surprising, but as far as surprises go, the actual rating (that opening was a lie, I apologize) is PG-13. As the MPAA puts it:
PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, language and some crude references.
So there you have it. No one was really expecting a PG or R rating for the film, so this isn’t really a surprise. It appears to be in line with the rest of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maybe one day we will get that R-Rated MCU movie – but it’s not really in the plans at the moment. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, though, it is a possibility:
“There may be an opportunity for an R-rated Marvel brand as long as we let audiences know what’s coming.”
It’s definitely a more uplifting set of comments than the ones he gave back in 2016, when he said there were no plans for R-Rated Marvel movies. With the Disney/FOX acquisition, there’s obviously Deadpool, so it could be just a matter of time.
Either way, Avengers: Infinity War will be here on April 27th – PG-13 rating and all.
