The Grudge franchise has never really gone quiet, and much like how The Ring was rebooted last year, The Grudge will be getting the same treatment. According to Deadline, in 2019 (August 16th, to be exact) we’ll be getting treated to another remake of the original Japanese film, and The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi will once again produce.
Raimi has recently spoken about how exciting it is that the film is coming together. According to him,
“We are so excited about this new adaptation,” he begins. “We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia.”
The remake will be written by Jeff Buhler, with plans for Nicolas Pesce to direct. Insidious lead Lin Shaye will star alongside Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, and John Cho.
In the original film titled Ju-On…
In a jealous rage, a man kills his wife and son in their home, and everyone who visits falls prey to a terrible curse.
The franchise has seen quite a bit of attention over the years, the Japanese variations even crossed over with Ringu aka the Japanese version of The Ring. While it would probably be more entertaining to just see an Americanized version of that, we’ll at least get to see a more relevant and hopefully decent interpretation of the original story.
The Grudge returns to theaters on August 16, 2019.
