The MCU has got a long line of films ahead with many secret projects in the covers, but we may have had a hinting, maybe even a close confirmation, that one of the films in question are The Eternals.
The report of this exclusive is coming from former IGN editor Jeremy Conrad on his website, MCUCosmic. Created by Jack Kirby, The Eternals are a mix of earthlings that are mixed with some crazy genetic experimentation, similar to Kirby’s other work with DC’s New Gods. Another fact is we may see them sooner and that is due to a change in Thanos’ motivations:
…Thanos’ home of Titan appears in the movie, but that’s not even the biggest part of it. In the comics, Thanos was in love with the physical manifestation of death and wanted to balance the universe for her. That’s changed in the MCU where his motivation comes from the decline of the civilization on Titan. When you realize Marvel is planning to introduce The Eternals (some of which are from Titan), the changing of Thanos’ motivation from the comics takes on an even bigger meaning as it gives a big part of Phase 4 a backstory and setup.
You can tell Conrad has been very hyped himself to tell the news, as he went as far as several social media outlets and sites about the foreshadowing of this announcement. Even to those saying it won’t do well for being an obscure film, Conrad made quite the perfect counter:
“But The Eternals? No one knows who they are! This will be Marvel’s first bomb!” Swap “The Eternals” in that sentence with “Guardians of the Galaxy” and you’ll see something people were saying back in 2014 when Marvel decided to bring a different cosmic team to the big screen.
Speaking of Guardians specifically, it appears James Gunn himself may be handling some creative uses on the other worlds too, appearing post Guardians of the Galaxy 3:
Aside from comments about how Phase 4 would be more “cosmic” there have also been those reports about how James Gunn is helping Marvel Studios decide what directions to take their cosmic properties. And it sounds as if the groundwork for The Eternals is being put down right now.
This isn’t the first time that a “cosmic direction” has been talked about for the MCU. Evangeline Lilly and Benedict Cumberbatch have hinted at it very recently.
That part of the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse Phase 4 seems like an eternity away with a 2021/2022 release, but in the meantime, we have Thanos and Avengers: Infinity War to look forward to coming this month on April 27th.
